What is Traditional Thai Massage?

Traditional Thai Massage is a very ancient system of healing and maintaining good overall health. Thai massage therapy combines rhythmic massage, acupressure, gentle twisting, deep stretching and meditation. Traditional Thai Massage is well known to release tension, increase vitality and create feelings of well being.

For those people familiar with Thai Massage Therapy, you won’t need convincing about the many benefits to your well-being; all we can add is that the Nattaya Traditional Thai Massage Therapy Centre will enhance your professionally administered massage with the following:

  • Your choice of free complimentary drinks, from Tea and Coffee, to wine and spirits.
  • Crisp clean white towels.
  • Personal unused slippers for every customer.
  • Spacious shower facilities with luxury soaps and gels provided.
  • Ample toilet facilities
  • Traditional Thai music piped throughout the building.

  • Spacious comfortable seating areas in which to relax before and after your massage experience.

  • Clean white robes for use when showering.

  • Numerous authentic Thai art and goods for sale, including all therapeutic and remedial oils & lotions.

  • Rooms decorated and maintained to the highest of standards.

  • Last but not least; friendly staff who are always on hand to talk you through the merits of each type of massage, and what may be best for you.

If you are unfamiliar with Thai massage then we would wholeheartedly recommend that you at least try once, as we are sure you will be suitably impressed with the whole experience.  Whilst details of individual types of massage are given on our “About Nattaya’s Massage” page, we will attempt to explain here the basis of Thai massage in its simplest form.

Properly trained Thai massage therapists have an in-depth knowledge of how our bodies are put together; how bone connects to sinew, and muscle to tendon, and how our blood flows to every extremity of the body.

Understanding this complex maze of tissue, enables the masseuse/therapist to manipulate aching and underused muscles in a way that walking from the fridge to the sofa could never achieve.  No two massages are the same, as the masseuse/therapist will apply different techniques and levels of strength to suit the individual person, depending on many factors such as age, size, previous injuries etc, and of course the recipients personal preferences.

So, following a brief initial consultation with your masseuse/therapist, your massage can be as rigorous or as soft as you like, with the option to adjust as you progress.

Thai Foot Massage (Reflexology treatment that concentrates on the feet and lower legs)

The origins of Thai Massage lie in Buddhism where massage was taught in the monasteries and practiced in the family. In many ancient traditions there is often one person associated with the foundation of the therapy.

In Thai Massage this is Dr Shivago Komarpaj – the founder of Nuad-Bo RarnThai Massage. Dr Shivago was a physician and contemporary of Buddha and many regard him as the father of this branch of medicine. Although Thai Massage has its roots in Buddhism there are no religious connotations or rituals in the massage itself, however practitioners are taught to say a prayer before beginning a Thai bodywork treatment.

 A Typical Session

Thai Foot Massage is relaxing yet highly invigorating. The uniqueness of Thai Foot Massage is its ability to include the receiver and giver in its benefits. Both come out feeling more open, stretched, refreshed and balanced.

There is a receptive awareness between giver and receiver creating a meditative space for both participants to move into a space of gentle trust and receptivity. A Thai body worker learns to trust her/his intuition rather than the structured diagnosis used in various other disciplines. The quality of the treatment comes from the carefully tuned “listening skills” of the therapists hands together with good technique and practice.

Benefits of Thai Foot Massage

  • Release of tension & tight muscles in the feet
  • Deep relaxation
  • Bringing the awareness to the body as a whole
  • Promotes well being
  • Aids sleep
  • Lifts mood
  • Relieves anxiety and stress

Manchester Remedial Massage

With Remedial Massage Techniques, many are similar to Deep Tissue Massage, the difference in the type of appointment is that Remedial Massage only treats the problematic area and there is usually not time to include any general massage unless specifically requested and extra time booked.

A full Postural Analysis assessment and Range of Motion tests are performed to ascertain the problematic muscles in addition to a thorough questionnaire with regards to past injuries, postural habits and type of work and hobbies, and/or repetitive strain injuries.

The treatment begins with Deep Tissue Massage techniques to soften superficial layers thereby enabling the therapist to sink into the deeper layers, as this is often where many problems lie. A variety of techniques are also used including Neuromuscular Techniques e.g. erotic massage manchester

Trigger Point techniques and various forms of stretching including Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF); Muscle Energy Technique (MET) and Soft Tissue Release (STR).

Manchester Therapeutic Massage

This is a “gently firm” massage and is often performed as a full body massage however many clients benefit from a 30 to 45 minute massage to the upper body alone. Tight and knotted areas will receive more attention and overall it is a firm, rhythmic massage aiding relaxation and promoting a sense of well being.

It is a great massage to have if there is no specific problem to be addressed and makes a good “preventative” massage in keeping the muscles and joints free from tension. In the full 90-minute massage the hands, feet, abdomen and face are also massaged.

Manchester Royal Thai Massage

Royal Thai massage was developed specifically to treat Thai royalty and thus involves particular skill and expertise. During a treatment many specialised massage techniques are applied, as well as gentle physical adjustments. Royal Thai massage is beneficial for overall health. massage parlour manchester

Nothing prepares you for The Royal Thai massage. For one, there is purpose built ergonomic massage bed, along with a pair of really comfortable pair of white flowing pajamas and a shirt, there are no applications or aroma oils or cream, no showers or water jets flowing from anywhere.

The only thing at work here, is a magical movement of two phenomenally coordinated and well-trained hands, in the case of Nattaya and her trained staff, who are following a 2,500-year-old tradition of the Asian healing art form, the professional training is evident from the outset. In fact, its growing popularity across the world does not come as a surprise because of its profound ability to increase the range of motion in the body while relaxing it and maintaining a balanced energy flow through, so revitalising it.

Nattaya is in her late thirties and began training early in life and already has years of practice behind her and full certification credentials. In fact, Miss Salinlada Koohathong, Director of the renowned Udonthani Thai Traditional Massage & Health Promotion Institute of Thailand promoted Nattaya to “Specialist Teacher” status in March 2008, and says she is one of her best graduates and agrees about the magic in Nattaya’s hands.

“A qualified therapist is very important for this massage as she is trained for specific knowledge and therefore is prepared to read each individual body response so as to manipulate the stretching accordingly,” says Salinlada from Thailand.

As we said, nothing prepares you for this massage. So, the stretching does come as a surprise as one’s idea of a massage has always been one where the body is expected to have the least movement apart from turning from back to front. Not so here.

Nattaya and her staff make sure that every muscle is used (not abused) and well-stretched, while constantly managing to relax it as well, which is where the magic lies. Considering the amount of stretching she makes a body do, you would expect to be tired post the session when what happens is exactly the opposite.

As Nattaya moves her hands she informs (on asking) that the Royal Thai massage used to be given to the King, his family and the aristocracy in Thailand, making her arm stretch suddenly looks easier!

Simply explained, this massage could also be called a kind of Thai acupressure which uses the theory of “10 sen”, the concept of invisible energy lines running through the body, as Nattaya and the girls explain in their broken English, as they press their palms on a point in the lower back.

In fact, for those who have never had a Thai massage, the Royal one is the precursor to the more rigorous traditional Thai one, and we’re sure you’ll feel like partying the night away, after your first one hour treatment.

Thai Style Hot Stone Massage

Many Spa’s offer a hot stone treatment which involves strategic placement of the stones which remain stationary throughout the treatment, and prices are usually on the high side due to the “presentation and specialist” tag commonly associated with this type of treatment.

An authentic Thai hot stone massage however, uses the hot stones to their true potential, as the stones; following strategic placement, are then re-heated and used in conjunction with hot oils to massage from the feet to the upper torso using the traditional Thai massage method, thus generating a deeper heat into the muscles.

As with the Herbal Compress; many customers having experienced the hot stone treatment are keen to incorporate this into their normal Thai massage sessions, as the long lasting feeling experienced afterwards has been described on many occasions as “Amazing”.

Herbal Compress

Herbal compress treatments provide a myriad of benefits and are best described as a “Great treatment using only Mother Nature”.

Pre-packed bundles of herbs; shipped directly from Thailand by Nattaya, are heated using a purposed designed steamer, just enough to release the beneficial oils of the herbs which are then applied to the relevant parts of the body.

Some of the benefits and applications include:

  • Improved skin condition
  • Easing of chronic digestive problems
  • Promotion of general health, whilst the body recovers from pregnancy
  • Soothing of sore muscles

Hot compresses are also generally used as a more comfortable form of accupressure to stimulate tender, or sensitive areas which can not be massaged directly, and can aid in the reduction of swelling.

Typical herbs used in compress bundles include:

Jasmine, Eucalyptus, Camphor, Cinnamon and Peppermint
These herbs stimulate the senses, relax the mind, reduce mental disturbance and stress.

Ginger, Cayenne Oil and Turmeric
To stimulate energy, improve circulation, reduce congestion and relax muscles.

Tamarind, Lime, Lemon Grass, Lime Leaf, Kaffir Lime, Mandarin Orange and Prai
To cleanse skin, treat dermatitis or rash, disinfect cuts, acne, and kill bacteria, as well as improving skin tone.

Massage during pregnancy

Whilst some establishments will offer full massage treatments during pregnancy, we do not recommend it, as certain parts of the treatment are thought to bring on premature labour.  The most common problems associated with pregnancy are painful feet and back ache, and unfortunately it is the concentrated stimulation of these areas during massage that are the most likely triggers for bringing about premature labour.  We are happy to carry out massage on pregnant women; however, it will be a vastly softer treatment than normal (relaxation techniques are used) and although our staff are qualified & insured to carry out this treatment, it is the customers responsibility to inform us of any current pregnancy; whatever the gestation stage.
